A teacher and coach at Pickens Academy in Carrollton is faces charges of allegedly having sex with a student.

Charli Jones Parker, 30, was arrested Monday. She is charged with having a sexual encounter with a student younger than 19 as a school employee.

The charge is a class b felony and carries the potential sentence of 2 to 20 years in a state penitentiary

District Attorney Chris McCool, who governs Fayette, Lamar and Pickens counties, said the allegation involves a male student and that the alleged sex acts didn’t occur at the school.

 According to the Alabama State Department of Education, there have been nearly 200 investigations of inappropriate interactions between teachers and students conducted in Alabama alone since 2011.

Pickens Academy Headmaster Brad White released the following statement:

The primary concern of Pickens Academy is the safety of our students, Pickens Academy is very upset about the allegations against our employee. The employee will be suspended immediately and further action may be taken upon investigation.  I request prayers for our school family and for all the families involved.
