PICKENS COUNTY MEDICAL CENTER CLOSING MARCH 6

Pickens County Medical Center is closing March 6, according to a news release sent by the Pickens County Health Care Authority Feb. 28.
According to the news release, the closure is happening because the hospital’s financial condition is unsustainable. Existing patients will be discharged or transferred to other area hospitals on or before the closing date.
The hospital is located about 90 miles west of Birmingham near the Mississippi line and is one of the county’s largest employers with about 200 workers.
About 20,200 live in the county. A trade group says 17 privately run hospitals have closed in the state over the last decade, and only one of those reopened.
