One Paul W. Bryant High School student took the next step towards realizing his dream of becoming a college athlete.
The Stampede’s Ray Englebert signed a college scholarship to attend and run cross country at University of Tennessee at Martin.
Englebert said he fell in love with the culture and team atmosphere after visiting the UT-Martin campus. Now that his college decision is taken care of, Englebert can focus on some unfinished business that remains in his high school career.
“I want to win a state championship before this season,” Englebert said. “In college I want to try and do great with my team, and then be the best I can be.”
Englebert wrapped up with high school cross country career on a high. In Novembers AHSAA Cross Country State Championship meet, he finished 15th out of 246 competitors in the boys 5K race in Class 6A. That effort earned him All-State recognition.
Also this past season, Englebert broke the Paul W. Bryant school record in the boys 5K race at the Northridge Cross Country Invitational.
