OUTDOOR ACTION PROGRAM OFFERS NEW, RETURNING STUDENTS A CHANCE AT MAKING THE WORLD A LITTLE BETTER

Dozens of University of Alabama Honors College students came back to Tuscaloosa a little early this year so they could offer a helping hand.

On Monday, UA’s Outdoor Action program was at Moundville Archaeological Park, where new and returning students were cleaning up.

Outdoor Action group leader Beau Schaeffer said he’s hoping the students take their volunteering spirit with them when they leave the university.

“We like to educate them on Alabama,” he said. “And our resource issues. and our environmental issues here. We hope that that knowledge carries over to the rest of the United States.”

Outdoor Action is a week-long undertaking that offers students a chance to help the state with environmental cleanup and learn more about what’s expected of them in the Honors College program. This year, students are also working at Foscue Park in Demopolis, Deerlick Park in Holt, Lake Lurleen State Park and Hurricane Creek.
