OUT OF THE DARKNESS WALK TAKES A LOOK AT SUICIDE
By WVUA 23 Student Reporter Madison MacLean
According to an Emory University study, there are more than 1,000 suicides on college campuses every year. The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention and the University of Alabama Counseling Center want to change that.
The Tuscaloosa “Out of the Darkness” walk is one of hundreds of walks across the country that brings awareness and resources to campuses. UA Counseling Center Director Lee Key says “Folks who are struggling with suicidal thoughts are in the dark and they need to come out…it’s coming into the light.”
Organizations set up tables to give students as many resources as possible. The goal of UA’s Suicide Awareness Week and the walk is to help students recognize the signs of someone in need, before it’s too late.
