Now-empty Tutwiler dorm coming down on July 4

Fireworks will not be the only boom taking place July 4 in Tuscaloosa as the University of Alabama’s longstanding Tutwiler Hall is finally coming down.

The all-women’s dorm located on Paul W. Bryant Drive arrived on campus in 1968, and is being replaced in the fall by the brand new Tutwiler Hall located right behind the current dorm.

Beginning Thursday, firefighters will be training at the dorm while it’s also prepared for demolition.

Their training will focus on equipment and hands-on situations.

The New Tutwiler Residence Hall will hold 1,200 female students with two-person rooms, private bathrooms in each room and lounge areas.
