NOTT HALL HAS A NEW NAME: HONORS HALL

Nott Hall

The University of Alabama Board of Trustees is changing the name of a building honoring a Civil War proponent who believed white people were superior to other races.

Nott Hall, named for Josiah C. Nott, will be renamed Honors Hall.

According to Encyclopedia of Alabama, Nott was a doctor who wrote extensively on race and believed in the existence of superior and inferior races.

Any links between Nott and the university are scarce at best, said UA Board of Trustee Member Judge John England Jr.

More buildings are also being considered for renaming.
