Northside High School quarterback Jake Corkren is saying goodbye to Friday Night Lights and hello to the Saturday spotlight.

Earlier this month, Corkren, one of the greatest players in Northside football history, committed to the University of West Alabama. In 2019, Corkren threw for 3,600 yards and 38 touchdowns, helping Northside to an 11-2 record. The Rams went unbeaten in Region play, and advanced to the third round of the Class 4A Playoffs for the first time in program history.

“It means a great deal to our program to have Jake sign,” said Northside football coach Chris Hilliker. “It sends a message to our kids, that our program is able to produce players of that caliber, that colleges want.”

Hilliker is a former UWA football player himself, which makes his opportunity even more significant.

“We’re excited for him, and I’m real excited he’s going to UWA,” Hilliker said. “We’re excited to be able to go watch him.”
