BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – Alabama’s newest sports venue opened Saturday night.

UAB took on Liberty in football at the $200 million, 45,000-seat outdoor stadium built in downtown Birmingham. Liberty took home the win, 36-12.

Protective Stadium replaces the 94-year-old Legion Field as the home of the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

UAB helped fund construction along with local governments, the area civic center authority and Birmingham-based Protective Life Corp.

The stadium was built after decades of discussion about a replacement for Legion Field.
