NEW SMOKE ALARMS ALERT RESIDENTS TO EVACUATE

The addition of new smoke alarms to a Tuscaloosa apartment complex has potentially saved the lives of the  residents.

About 3 a.m. Monday, Tuscaloosa Fire and Rescue responded to a call regarding a fire at the Broadmore Gardens apartment complex off of James Harrison Parkway.

Four apartment units were involved, but all residents were able to evacuate while emergency personnel worked to put out the fire.

Fire Marshal Gene Holcomb said the recent renovation of the complex included the installation of interconnected smoke alarms, which alerted the residents to evacuate the units. No injuries were reported.

Officials say the investigation into the cause continues.
