On Friday afternoon, the Men Against Rape and Sexual Assault (M.A.R.S.) organization kicked off its first event to raise money for the Tuscaloosa Safe Center.

M.A.R.S. is a new organization within the Not on My Campus organization to promote male advocacy on an important issue on the University of Alabama’s campus.

Anna Katherine Sherman, the president of Not on My Campus, said people want to see a change on UA’s campus about sexual assault and rape culture, and this event showed people there is a way to help make a change within the student body.

“People want to make a change and this is a great way to get people out and raise money for a cause that directly benefits survivors,” Sherman said.

M.A.R.S. wants men to feel comfortable to speak out about an issue that impacts many individuals and wants to educate them on what they can do to prevent sexual assault from happening.

The fundraiser was held at Innisfree Irish Pub.

“Having this event, which is about sexual assault advocacy at a bar, so in a way it’s taking back bar culture and making it a place where we don’t have to be afraid of sexual assault happening,” President of M.A.R.S. Jack Kappelman said.

Ashley Silver, who attended the fundraiser, said having this event at a bar showed people that the organization is going to be a visible part of campus and the Tuscaloosa community.
