A one-of-a-kind hotel and rooftop eatery in downtown Tuscaloosa celebrated its grand opening Thursday with a ribbon-cutting.
The five-story, 120-room AC Hotel Downtown Tuscaloosa by Mariott features the Fifth on Sixth rooftop bar, and for guests includes an outdoor patio, a 24-hour fitness room and a European-inspired breakfast buffet.
During the grand opening, they hosted a raffle for guests including giveaways for hotel stays at other Mariotts throughout the Southeast, gift baskets and more.
Local leaders including Tuscaloosa Mayor Walt Maddox, Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama President and CEO Jim Page were present at the event.
Maddox said he’s glad the area is getting a new lease on life because the hotel is at the former site of Fire Station No. 1, which is now located at the corner of Greensboro Avenue and 15th Street.
“The city has been working with AC Hotels for several years,” Maddox said. “This is really a celebration because we take this part of the city’s history and transformed it into something that’s not only going to generate tax revenue but continue to show revitalization in downtown Tuscaloosa.”
AC Mariott Hotels Director of Sales Darren Segura said he’s hoping the community embraces the new rooftop bar.
“I am excited about opening this hotel downtown,” he said.
The hotel is located at 2885 6th St., Tuscaloosa. Fifth on Sixth is open Monday through Thursday 5 to 10:30 p.m., Friday and Saturday 5 to 11:30 p.m. and is closed Sundays.
