NAACP CONCERNED DUST FROM CEMENT MAY BE HARMFUL TO STUDENTS AT NEARBY SCHOOL

A dustup over a Ready Mix USA, a cement company and a Tuscaloosa elementary school may not be settled anytime soon.

Jerry Carter, President of the local chapter of the NAACP, said his office was contacted by a local resident who claims the dust could be harmful to students at Central Elementary.

Employees at Ready Mix said the dust is coming from their gravel driveway, and they are keeping the ground wet to minimize any dust.

Carter said something needs to be done.

“Within a stone’s throw of this school you’ve got a cement batching plant mixing all that stuff up together,” he said. “It’s constantly blowing over here.”

A public meeting is being held over the issue at 5 p.m. Thursday at the McDonald Hughes Center in Tuscaloosa.
