MSU REACTS TO REPORTED ACTIVE SHOOTER
Fear, disbelief and horror…just some of the emotions the Mississippi State University family is feeling, after a student threatened to harm himself and other students.
The suspect is freshman computer engineering major Fhu-Qui “Bill” Cong Nguyen of Madison, Mississippi.
Nguyen was arrested near McCool Hall on campus at 10:26 AM, just eleven minutes after the alert was put out.
This comes just one day after the tragic shooting deaths of journalists Alison Parker and Adam Ward in Roanoke, Virginia.
MSU Chief Communications Officer Sid Salter says students, faculty and staff were already hurting and on edge from the previous day’s events.
Fortunately, there were no injuries MSU.
Salter tells WVUA 23 no shots were fired and no weapon has been recovered. Nguyen was simply threatening to cause harm to himself and others.
The University’s official feed for emergency information “Maroon Alert,” was crucial in keeping everyone updated as the situation was brought under control.
Drills are done monthly through the school’s crisis action team to deal with problems of this nature.
Nguyen has been turned over by MSU Police to other law enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing.
Classes resumed on campus at 2:00 PM.
Counseling services are available through the student health center.
