mount pilgrim baptist church fire

Mount Pilgrim Baptist Church on East 39th Street went up in flames this morning.

The church, located near Interstate 20/59 and Skyland Boulevard, between Greensboro Avenue and McFarland Boulevard, is a polling location for the neighborhoods surrounding its location.

Tuscaloosa Fire Marshal Gene Holcomb said a day care was in session when the fire began, but everyone in the church was evacuated safely. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Tuscaloosa Fire Chief Randy Smith said the fire call came in just after 9:30, and fire trucks were responded just minutes later.

All children and employees who were on the premises when the fire broke out have been accounted for.
