MINERS MAKING SURE CHRISTMAS IS MERRY

BROOKWOOD – Over 800 families could miss out on Christmas this year due to layoffs at Jim Walter Resources.

Members of United Mine Workers of America gathered at Union Hall 2397 in Brookwood Friday night to enlist volunteers for Toys for Miners, a plan to help put toys and more in the hands of miners who now lack a steady paycheck.

Donation boxes are located at:

  • Union Hall 2397
  • Brookwood Town Hall
  • Expressions (Brookwood)
  • Evergreen Baptist Church (Coaling)
  • New Faith Baptist (Pleasant Grove)

Needed donations include:

  • Toys
  • Bicycles
  • Electronics
  • Gift Cards
  • Decorations
  • Balloons
  • Signs
  • Tables
  • Chairs
  • Christmas Tree

Families can receive donations for Thanksgiving and Christmas on November 14th at Lakeview Police Department, and November 15th through 21st at Union Hall 2397.

Toys for Miners is the brainchild of Heather Bosch, who is surprised at how quickly her idea took off.

Bosch said, “I just wanted to get some of my friends that were saying what could we do. We were sitting around the store. We got to do something. And I started a Facebook event. And it went from 50 to 3.4K overnight”.

Monetary donations are also being accepted online at GoFundMe.com/WalterEnergy.
