Memorial service Friday honors 13 fallen miners

BROOKWOOD – The Brookwood community honored the 13 fallen miners who lost their lives in a mine explosion on Sept 23, 2001.

Friday, the West Brookwood Church hosted the 21st annual memorial service with music, inspirational prayers, and the Pledge of Allegiance.

International Vice President of the United Mine Workers of America expressed how this memorial is for all miners across the state of Alabama who lost their lives.

Brookwood’s Mayor Joe Barger said the service is a way for the community to remember and pay tribute to the lives that were lost. “So we never want to forget the sacrifices these men gave, made, and the impact it had on our community,” said Mayor Barger.

Past and present miners showed up to support the fallen miners and the family members they left behind. The event open to the public.
