MCDONALD HUGHES COMMUNITY CENTER STORM SHELTER NOW OPEN
The McDonald Hughes Community Center now has the largest storm shelter in West Alabama.
It can house up to 1,700 people and is about 12,000 square feet of space.
When the shelter isn’t being used as a safe room, it will serve as a community recreation center with a full basketball court that can be converted into two youth-sized courts.
“This has been a long, long process, and from the planning stages it’s actually been almost eight years,” said Tuscaloosa County Park and Recreation Authority Executive Director Gary Minor.
District 2 Tuscaloosa City Councilwoman Raevan Howard said the new shelter is especially important considering rough weather happening Monday.
“To have this facility open on a day like today, just reminds us of how important it is for us to work together and collaborate as a community,” Howard said.
