MARENGO COUNTY VOTE ADDS NEW TAX; MONEY GOING TOWARD HOSPITAL

Residents in Marengo County went to the polls Tuesday and approved a 4-mill property tax increase.

The money will be used to help Whitfield Memorial Hospital in Demopolis. The hospital has been struggling for years, and will receive about $900,000 a year with the new tax.

Those funds will be used for the development of a long term capital plan, day to day operations, some infrastructure updates and upgrades to the emergency room.

District 2 Marengo County Commissioner Jason Windham said it was time for something to be done.

“I don’t think its something only Marengo County is facing,” Windham said. “I think in the last several years, I know there’s been several rural other rural hospitals that closed in Alabama. I don’t think its just Eastern Alabama. I think its a National epidemic.”

The money will be collected by the Marengo County Commission beginning October 2020.
