MAN WITH HAMMER SHOT BY DEPUTY IN ALABAMA IDENTIFIED

SEMMES, Ala. (AP) – Authorities in Alabama have identified a man who was wielding a hammer before he was fatally shot by a deputy. The Mobile County Sheriff’s Office says 34-year-old Bernie Wade Johnson was shot Thursday outside a Walmart store in Semmes. Store workers had called to report a theft. The deputy encountered a man armed with a claw hammer outside the store. The sheriff’s office says Johnson threatened the deputy and refused to put the hammer down. The deputy fired once, killing Johnson. The deputy has been placed on administrative leave. The deputy hasn’t been identified.
