Trump Balloon

It’s been more than two weeks since a Tuscaloosa man slashed a giant balloon designed as a protest of President Donald Trump before the Alabama-LSU game.

Trump was in attendance at the game, and a GoFundMe raised the funds to bring the Baby Trump balloon to Tuscaloosa. The balloon was set up in Monnish Park near the corner of 15th Street and Hackberry Lane.

Hoyt Hutchinson is the man who said he got so fed up when he saw the balloon that he made a plan, grabbed a knife and slashed a hole in it.

Today he spoke with WVUA 23’s Amanda Hull, revealing what was going through his mind that day, and that he wasn’t acting alone.

“I realized I need a getaway strategy, so I called my aunt and she said ‘Let’s go pop it,’ ” Hutchinson said. “I said I’m fixing to do it, I just need a get away driver and she said ‘Well I’m on my way.’ ”

Hutchinson was arrested and charged with first-degree criminal mischief before being placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $2,500 bond. His charge, which is a felony, is punishable by up to 10 years in prison, but

Would he do it again, though?

“You know, having a better understanding of the law and everything I’m going through now, I cant say that I would do it the same way,” he said. “But I would take action to get that thing out of here because this isn’t the place to do it.”

People who support Hutchinson have raised more than $40,000 through GoFundMe. He said he’s grateful for the support and prayers.
