MAN WANTED IN ETOWAH COUNTY FACING ATTEMPTED MURDER CHARGES AFTER OFFICER-INVOLVED SHOOTING

A man wanted in Etowah County is behind bars in Tuscaloosa after an officer-involved shooting Monday night.

Robert Lee Spires, who was wanted on a felony probation revocation warrant, was shot by officers as he attempted to escape in a vehicle.

It happened on Mayfair Drive around 10:30 p.m., after Tuscaloosa police got a tip on Spires’ location.

Three TPD officers went to the home and saw Spires standing outside. When Spires saw police, he ran to a vehicle backed into the carport, got in and turned it on. Officers told Spires to stop and get out of the vehicle, but Spires put it in gear and started driving toward the officers.

Several of the officers began firing at Spires, who drove across the yard and smashed into a tree. As he was being taken into custody, officers discovered he’d been struck in the shoulder by a bullet. His injury is minor.

Three witnesses who were not involved were also at the scene.

Spires has now been charged with three counts of attempted murder.
