A man is facing murder charges after the death of his girlfriend’s 1-year-old child.

Just before 7 a.m. Friday, Northstar EMS, Tuscaloosa Police, and Tuscaloosa Fire Rescue responded to Creekwood Village Apartments on a possible drowning. They found the 1-year-old child unresponsive, and he was taken to DCH Regional Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.

Christopher Cornelius Pearson, 27, told police he was giving the child a bath while his girlfriend was at work when he left the water running and walked out of the bathroom.

When Pearson came back, he said he saw the child almost completely underwater and began CPR while waiting on assistance to arrive.

Investigators said they gathered enough evidence to charge Pearson with murder. He’s been placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on a $150,000 bond.
