MAN DIES IN TUSCALOOSA POLICE CUSTODY
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (WVUA 23) – Friday night Tuscaloosa police responded to a call at the 200th block of 49th Avenue East at Crescent East apartments. Dispatchers received an anonymous call stating that a wanted suspect was siting on a porch at a residence and was in possession of a gun.
That suspect is Anthony Dewayne Ware. Ware was wanted for attempting to elude a warrant.
According to TPD, Ware fled into the woods when they arrived and officers chased after him. Officials also say, he resisted arrest twice, even after being pepper sprayed. Once they put him in handcuffs, he collapsed on their way out of the woods. Officials stated that CPR was administered right away and an ambulance was called to the scene immediately.
Ware died on the way to DCH at 10:42 PM.
Sgt. Blankley with TPD says, the six officers involved in ware’s case are still on active duty and will remain on duty during the investigation. Police cam footage is also being process by Tuscaloosa Homicide and will be resealed to the public after review..
