A 53-year-old man is dead, the 2-month-old girl he was holding is recovering from being shot and the girl’s mother is facing murder charges after a shooting Sunday morning.

Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s deputies were called to a home in the 4400 block of 20th Street Northeast on a shooting around 9:15 a.m.

Deputies said they found the man, identified as Willie Haywood Jr., dead at the scene and the infant also suffering from a gunshot injury.

The child’s mother, 25-year-old Lashana Henderson, was detained and told the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit that she armed herself with a pistol during an argument with Haywood and fired it while he was holding the child.

The infant was taken to Children’s Hospital in Birmingham and remained in critical condition as of Monday.

Henderson was charged with capital murder and first-degree domestic violence and was placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail on no bond.
