A man accused of murder after a shooting death in Greensboro is also accused of threatening the victim weeks before the shooting.

Darryl Paige was fatally shot around 11 p.m. Jan. 11 on Ward Street in Greensboro after he received a phone call and walked out the door of the home. As Paige walked out, he was shot several times, and law enforcement found 25 shell casings near the home.

Witnesses said they heard shots being fired from two different weapons and saw two suspects running from the scene. One of those suspects was identified as Eddie Gray, who had been feuding with Paige before Paige’s death.

Gray was a victim in a shooting near a night club in Perry County on Dec. 21, along with another man. The other man, identified as Jeffrey Thomas, was killed in that shooting.

After the shooting, witnesses said they heard Gray claim he’d been set up by someone named “Paige.”

Paige spoke with Greensboro Police Chief Mike Hamilton on Dec. 26, saying he was getting threatening text messages from Gray including messages where Gray suggested he spared Paige’s life once and wasn’t going to do it again.

Several others also reported similar threatening messages in December.

Gray has been charged with murder and is being held in the Hale County Jail on a bond of $780,000.
