A 42-year-old man is behind bars on kidnapping, rape and sodomy charges after an incident Tuesday evening in Coaling.

Coaling Police said they were called to investigate the possible kidnapping by a witness who said they saw a man approach a woman in a car, cursing and telling the woman to get out of the car while the woman told the witness to call police.

The witness said they went inside to call, but soon saw the man and woman leave in a maroon vehicle. Coaling Police said they put out a be-on-the-lookout for the vehicle, and the Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit and CPD eventually found the victim and suspect in a wooded area off Wire Road in Coaling.

Authorities said the victim told officers the man broke out her car window, pried her vehicle’s door open and forcibly removed her from her car and into his vehicle, then took her to a remote wooded area where he sexually assaulted her.

The victim and suspect, identified as Jamie Sanford, had a prior relationship, and investigators said the victim recently filed a police report because she said Sanford threatened to kill her.

Sanford has been charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree rape and first-degree sodomy, and remains in the Tuscaloosa County Jail pending a $180,000 bond.
