A 26-year-old man is behind bars today after he was accused of kidnapping someone early this morning.

Police said they were called to the Willow Wyck apartment complex on 23rd Street East around 2:50 a.m. for a possible kidnapping.

A 23-year-old man told officers he’d had money and his cellphones taken and was held against his will at the apartment after he’d been dropped off there by a friend.

The victim said that after he was dropped off, he was approached by the suspect, Cody Len Estes of Elrod, inside the apartment. He said Estes ordered him to call his friend and get him to come back, then began assaulting him.

Then, Estes went into his pockets and took money and both the victim’s cellphones.

The victim said he broke free and ran out of the apartment, but Estes chased him down, threatened to kill him and dragged him back inside. About 20 minutes later, the victim said he ran out onto the balcony and jumped, then ran to a nearby convenience store to call for help.

Witnesses at the scene said they overhead the victim and suspect arguing and corroborated the victim’s account.

Estes was arrested for first-degree kidnapping and third-degree robbery and placed in the Tuscaloosa County Jail pending bonds totaling $75,000.
