MADISON WOMAN SENTENCED TO 18 MONTHS IN PRISON FOR TAX FRAUD SCHEME

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (AP) – A Madison woman has been given an 18-month prison sentence following a scheme to obtain hundreds of thousands of dollars in fraudulent tax refunds.

The U.S. Department of Justice announced that 49-year-old Angelique B. Harris was sentenced Tuesday by a Birmingham federal judge on one count each of theft of government property and money laundering. Harris pleaded guilty to the charges in July and has also been ordered to pay $658,978 in restitution to the Internal Revenue Service.

Prosecutors say Harris forfeited a luxury car worth roughly $45,000 that she bought with money she stole in the scheme.
