Mayor Walt Maddox signed a proclamation making January Human Trafficking Awareness Month last night.

He said the goal is to celebrate what has already been done against this issue while also becoming aware of signs that can potentially save a life. This proclamation comes after several human trafficking crimes have been brought to light in Tuscaloosa in 2018.

Calling human trafficking an abomination, Maddox said he did not want Tuscaloosa to be a city that stands back and allows it to happen.

“We forget that most of those who are involved in human trafficking are young, they’re defenseless, and they need our voice in the fight,” Maddox said. “By doing this tonight, we hope that more people will become aware of it and they can become the voice of those who need our help.”
