UPDATE:

The 18-year-old accused of shooting and killing Lowndes County Sheriff John Williams is in custody.

William Chase Johnson came back to the scene of the shooting just after midnight with the firearm used in the shooting in his hand, authorities said. He was taken into custody with no issue.


An Alabama sheriff is dead and an 18-year-old man is on the run in Lowndes County tonight.

Lowndes County Sheriff John Williams was killed in the line of duty Saturday evening.

The Alabama Law Enforcement Agency is asking for help locating William Chase Johnson, who is accused of shooting and killing Williams.

Johnson is a white male with brown hair who is 5 feet 9 inches tall and weighs about 137 pounds. He may be traveling on foot and is believed to be a serious risk to the public.

He was last seen at the QV gas station in Lowndes County around 8:15 p.m.
