<p>Tornadoes tore through Tennessee early Tuesday morning, killing at least 24 people and leaving a trail of destruction.</p><p>The Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6022 in Cottondale made it their mission to step in and help survivors get back on their feet.</p><p>They collected donations such as clothing, water and non-perishable foods.</p><p>VFW Post 6022 commander Donnie Nelson felt that it was important to pay it forward because of all the help that poured in from the tornado that hit Tuscaloosa on April 27, 2011.</p><p>“This is time to return the favor,” Nelson said. “Our neighbors and brothers and sisters that need help. It’s time for us to go step up and head out there to them and see what we can do for them.”</p><p>Within three days, the VFW had an overwhelming amount of donations including $390 in monetary donations.</p><p>Nelson is grateful for the generosity of fellow veterans and other people in the community.</p>
