LOCAL VETERAN CELEBRATES 100TH BIRTHDAY THIS WEEK
A local veteran is celebrating a century of life.
Edward Smith’s face beamed, as carloads of friends and family cruised slowly past the Tuscaloosa VA Medical Center. Parade participants held signs, displaying support for the centenarian.
Smith was born May 19, 1920, in Enterprise. The Army veteran enlisted in 1941, and served his country as a tech sergeant.
When asked the reason for his longevity, Smith recalled something his mother said many years ago.
“She said that I was such a fine baby, “ Smith said, “and the Lord thought so much of me until they decided to give me some longevity.”
Healthcare facilities currently prohibit visitation, due to COVID-19 concerns. However, the Monday parade allowed participants to celebrate at a safe social distance.
