Local radiology clinic highlighting importance of mammograms

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – The Radiology Clinic in Tuscaloosa has a fun way to encourage women to think about their health.
The clinic is hosting an event to encourage women to get their annual mammograms. All women over 40 should have one once a year to screen for breast cancer.
At The Radiology Clinic, each woman who has a mammogram during the month of October will have a pinwheel placed on the lawn to encourage others to participate.
“So come out, get screened, get checked,” said The Radiology Clinic Vice President of Marketing Briana Houston. “Hopefully, you don’t have breast cancer. But if you do, we want to catch it in the earliest stages. You can feel that there is a pinwheel out on our lawn to honor you for making the commitment to prioritize your health.”
One in eight women will get breast cancer in their lifetime, and men can get it, too. Early detection is key for a successful outcome.
“If you have breast cancer discovered in Stage Zero or Stage 1, your chance of survival five years down the road is nearly 100%,” Houston said. “There are a lot of women who may think ‘oh well, I don’t need to get a mammogram every year,’ or ‘I don’t need to start at age 40’ because they don’t have a family history of breast cancer. But 75% of women diagnosed have no family history.”
