Mind Changers, a local nonprofit organization, hosted a community job fair on Thursday to help people find jobs in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Rodney Pelt, CEO of Mind Changers, explains why this job fair was so important.

“In the past few months since the pandemic, we have a lot of people that have lost their jobs or have been furloughed or been laid off, and there are a lot of hurting families out there,” said Pelt. “So we just decided to come together and create an opportunity for those families that are suffering that have lost a job or what have you to get gainful employment again.”

Norther Region Recruiter for the Alabama Department of Corrections Lt. Jessica T. Billingsley said that jobs are currently available in North Alabama.

“Especially in a time like this with COVID going on, a lot of people are unemployed and we are a state agency, so I just want to let people know that we are hiring,” said Billingsley. “We have career opportunities, guaranteed career opportunities. As long as you meet the standards, you’re clear on everything, you will be hired.”

People throughout Tuscaloosa went to the event looking for employment opportunities, and many left with applications and information packets.

“People that are looking for jobs and opportunities, an event like this will give you the opportunity,” said Jeffrey Webb, the Program Coordinator for the ARC of Tuscaloosa.

“We probably need to have more of them quarterly, maybe even monthly to have or give the opportunity because sometimes you don’t know what’s out there and who’s hiring.”

Mind Changers is a Tuscaloosa-based nonprofit that engages in mentoring and community outreach in underserved areas in West Alabama.

“Our community needs to take care of our community,” said Pelt. “We need to take care of our own.”

It’s also important to up build and encourage and motivate others that might not be going their best right now and encourage them and motivate them to seize advantage of these opportunities to be successful and that’s what we’re here for.”
