Ministry Fundraiser

S.D Allen Ministries hosted their first-ever Oak City Market fundraiser over the weekend, raising money for those who need essential furniture in the Tuscaloosa community.

The Oak City Market is a flea market event featuring 35 local businesses and food trucks.

There was live entertainment and an auction, and S.D Allen Ministries Director Jeff Hurn said he wanted to host this event so families could visit outside and do some shopping for a good cause.

“People want to get outside, and with COVID and everything, they want to get outside with their families,” Hurn said. “We thought of something we can do in the fall before football season starts where you can bring your whole family out and also use local businesses.”

S.D Ministries delivers about 30 beds each month, and it costs around $100 for a platform frame, twin mattress and bedding.

“If we can have an event and raise a couple thousand dollars then that’s 20 or 30 kids who can sleep in a bed every night,” Hurn said.

Like many other businesses, Hurn said his ministry wound up shutting down for about three months during the pandemic.

He said he thought this would be a great way to not only help the ministry but other local small businesses in the area.

If you were unable to make it to the event but are interested in donating to the cause, you can do so right here.
