Local counseling center gets new location, updated look
By WVUA 23 News Reporter Jeremiah Hatcher
A local counseling center has a brand new location and a fresh look a few blocks away from their former business spot. Perception Counseling Services’ new location is 2825 Seventh St. in downtown Tuscaloosa.
Their new location is larger and offers even more services for Tuscaloosa’s community and beyond.
Perception Counseling Services can assist clients with depression, anxiety, domestic abuse, substance abuse, PTSD and trauma issues, among other mental health concerns, and they specialize in mental health training for educators and community leaders in addition to working with teenagers in need.
“It will be very beneficial,” said Perception owner Jennifer Vanhorn. “As we all know, the crime rate in Tuscaloosa has been going up over the years, and we want to get those teenagers affected by these events in here for support.”
Perception Counseling also hosts seminars and lectures that, in hopes, will give these groups resources to better assist with identifying individuals who suffer from mental illnesses.
“Since COVID-19 started, teachers are designated to provide emotional support for students,” Vanhorn said. “They have already become overwhelmed with this responsibility, so now it’s about trying to educate them on how to get help.
