Iron Bowl For Blood Donations

Several blood drives are being held throughout Alabama as supplies dwindle to critical levels. A recent blood drive in Birmingham was a huge help to blood banks that are currently in desperate need.

“So, if somebody comes and donates, they can actually save three lives,” said Blake Lee, with Lifesouth Community Blood Centers. “When they donate we can actually take that unit, we can send it down and you’ll pretty much divide into your different components in the blood and it’ll probably go to three different patients.”

Lifesouth is hosting blood drives every day here at The Colonnade Shopping Center in Birmingham, as well as at other locations throughout the state. In a time when people are worried about leaving their house, the safety of those who give blood is a top priority for Lifesouth.

“The FDA, they actually came out and stated that you cannot actually get the virus from donating blood or having a blood transfusion,” Lee said. “So, when you come here we go through a basic screening, of course if you have any symptoms, we want to make sure that you do not donate blood so we make sure we’re gonna catch you before that. You can tell when you go inside all the beds are spaced out so you’re not going to be sitting next to anybody. Of course, our technicians, they’re going to take care of you as well so we’re going to make sure everybody is safe.”
