LARGE AREA OF SIPSEY WILDERNESS AREA AFFECTED BY WILDFIRE
MOULTON, Ala. (AP) – A wildfire has burned more than 600 acres of forest in the Sipsey Wilderness of northwest Alabama.
The U.S. Forest Service says a large area of southern Lawrence County is affected by the blaze, which was first reported Friday by hikers.
The blaze has grown from about 100 acres to about 640 acres since then.
More than three dozen firefighters from as far away as Virginia are trying to control the fire.
The Forest Service is closing hiking trails and restricting campfires in the area because of the fire and dry conditions in the woods.
Authorities haven’t determined what started the fire.
