Event coordinator Heather Bosch started the “Toys for Miners” drive after a massive job cut at Jim Walter Resources. After the project was posted on social media, it quickly picked up momentum; people from all around Alabama wanted to help make Christmas a happy and stress free time for the families that were effected by the layoffs.

The drive has been going strong since November but on December 19th, parents picked up the toys their kids will enjoy come Christmas morning.

A food drive was also put together once volunteers realized that families may not be able to provide a Christmas dinner. So, along with all the toys, parents were also able to pick up a box of food. Volunteers say, the food drive will continue for as long as possible. Pets haven’t been forgotten either, collection efforts have already begun for families who have pets and are not able to purchase adequate food for them.
