JOYCE GARRARD MAY GET NEW TRIAL

The Gadsden woman serving a life sentence for running her granddaughter to death may get a new trial.

Etowah County Circuit Judge Billy Ogletree scheduled a hearing for Thursday for Joyce Hardin Garrard, 50.

Garrard’s attorneys say numerous rulings violated Garrard’s rights during her trial, and that jurors violated court orders to avoid news.

Garrard was convicted on capital murder charges for running her 9-year-old granddaughter to death over a lie about candy.

Garrard testified that she never meant to harm the child.

Prosecutors say they’re confident the conviction will hold up during appeal..
