IT’S ANIMAL SAFETY MONTH: HERE’S HOW TO KEEP YOUR PETS HEALTHY

October is National Animal Safety and Protection Month, and Tina Miller from the Tuscaloosa Metro Animal Shelter joined WVUA 23’s Philip Coleman on the 6 p.m. newscast Thursday to discuss keeping your pets safe.

The key? Prevention, Miller said. Always get your pet spayed or neutered, and make sure they go to the vet for yearly checkups. In addition, keep your pets on a monthly flea, tick and heartworm preventative — whether they’re outside or inside.

Miller said more than 7 million dogs and cats are placed in shelters each year, about between 30 and 40 percent of those are euthanized.

Interested in adopting? Here are some local spots offering you a chance to save a pet.
