INMATE KILLED AFTER ALTERCATION WITH TWO OTHER PRISONERS

BESSEMER, Ala. (AP) – An inmate has been stabbed to death at the William E. Donaldson Correctional Facility in Bessemer.

The Alabama Department of Corrections tells media outlets that 35-year-old Marreo Mitchell was stabbed during an altercation with two other inmates Saturday afternoon in a cell block. A prison doctor pronounced Mitchell dead just before 5 p.m.

The department says the cause of the altercation is not yet known. Two inmates are being detained as suspects. The department says it will not release the names of the suspects pending an investigation by the investigations and intelligence division.

No corrections officers or other inmates were injured in the altercation.

Mitchell was serving a 20-year sentence after being convicted for distribution of a controlled substance in 2010 in Montgomery County.
