A garden tended and cared for by inmates at the Walker County Jail in Jasper has produced a spicy first yield – jalapeño peppers.

The peppers have been harvested, jarred with vinegar and are ready to enjoy over some turnips, collards or any over dish that might benefit from a bit of spicy heat.

Since these peppers were grown by inmates at a jail, Walker County Sheriff Nick Smith gave them a special name: jail-apeño peppers.
