Inmate found dead Thursday at Tuscaloosa County Jail

The Tuscaloosa Violent Crimes Unit is investigating after a 38-year-old inmate was found dead at the Tuscaloosa County Jail Thursday evening.

Detention deputies discovered the inmate unresponsive around 8 p.m., and the inmate was later declared dead.

VCU was called out to assume the investigation, but because the death happened at a division of the Tuscaloosa County Sheriff’s Office, no investigators or supervisors affiliated with the office will be involved in the investigation.

Initial findings, including video surveillance, don’t show any signs of an altercation, assault or attempts at self-harm.

The inmate has not yet been identified.
