According to the Alabama Hospital Association, there is a critical blood supply crisis statewide after the number of blood donations have declined during the COVID-19 pandemic.

University of Alabama at Birmingham Director of Division of Trauma and Acute Care Surgery Jeff Kirby said in his 20 years of work, blood supply has never been this low and it’s impacting all aspects of the hospital.

“We take care of a lot of high equity, complex trauma care,” said Dr. Kirby. “Without those blood products, we will not be able to potentially protect the community and keep the community safe, so it’s at a critical level.”

Both Lifesouth and Red Cross host blood drives on a regular basis.

Appointments to donate blood at this time can be made here.
