A local student is back in town after accomplishing a feat most musicians can only dream of.
Paul W. Bryant High School trombonist Steffan Thurman was one of two students from Alabama chosen to perform with the High School Honors Symphony Orchestra last week at New York City’s prestigious Carnegie Hall.
Steffan has studied music for nearly a decade and was nominated for the honor by his teachers and band director. More than 10,000 nominations were received nationwide.
There’s little that could ever top such an honor, Steffan said, and he was stunned when he found out he’d been accepted.
“I was like ‘I’m going to do this. I’m going to play at Carnegie Hall,’ ” said Steffan. “Then when I walked in there my mind just went blank. I just had to appreciate the beauty of it all.”
He’s proud to have represented Alabama on a national level, Steffan said.
