Health Matters: Signs of stress

Sometimes the stresses of life have a bigger impact than you may realize, but there are signs you can watch out for.

University Medical Center psychologist Dr. John Burkhardt said a lot of people don’t know they’re struggling.

“I talk to people sometimes and they say, ‘oh, I’m not depressed’ or ‘I don’t think it’s this and that’ and I saw OK, and then I’ll ask some questions,” Burkhardt said.

How are you sleeping? How’s your appetite? Are you more irritable? Fatigued? Are you still doing the things you love to do?

If the answers to those questions are “not well,” “my appetite has changed,” “I’m more irritable,” “I have no energy” and “no, I’m not,” there’s a simple answer, Burkhardt said.

“You’ve just listed a whole bunch of things that fall under the classification of depression,” he said.
