HEALTH MATTERS, MARCH 18, 2020: MATERNAL HEALTH

Health Matters

One of the most challenging problems in rural Alabama today is the lack of access for maternal care, particularly for those living in under-served areas.

Dr. Mercedes Morales is an assistant professor at the University of Alabama College of Community Health Sciences. She said there’s an innovative research project that involves telemedicine and team-based care to ensure the best outcomes for women in under-served locations.

“One of the first things that happens as part of these visits is that the nurse will have a conversation with the mom to better gauge her level of knowledge and self-efficacy around taking care of her health throughout her pregnancy,” Morales said. “Of course, being on prenatal vitamins is going to be really important, making sure that she’s doing her kick counts to make sure the baby is moving and healthy, those kinds of things will be part of this program.”
