For many young folks, going to the doctor is something you only do when you’re sick.

Dr. Tiffany Thomas, a faculty member at University Medical Center, said it’s important everyone get regular checkups.

“High blood pressure is one that we commonly think of, diabetes is also another,” Thomas said. “It’s important to get treatments early. That really helps prevent complications.”

Being diagnosed with hypertension or diabetes doesn’t mean you’re guaranteed to take a medicine for it, she said.

“Having a primary care provider just reminds you of the dietary things you need to be doing,” Thomas said. “Making sure you’re exercising. Those things can go a long way in treating those conditions.”
